NewBo Run 2019

What do you have planned for Labor Day weekend? Consider joining in on some fun at the NewBo Run and Arts Fest. A Labor Day weekend tradition in the New Bohemia neighborhood, the NewBo Art Festival is set for 9am to 4pm Sunday, September 1, 2019.

The Annual NewBo Art Fest will take place in the heart of Cedar Rapids’ New Bohemia Art & Entertainment District. The New Bohemia District is a Mainstreet historical area that includes the NewBo City Market, CSPS/Legion Arts (an international music and art venue) restaurants, bars, coffee shops, artists’ studios and art galleries. As in the past, 3rd Street SE will be closed to accommodate the artist tents, street performers, live music throughout the day, a children’s activity area, the NewBo City Market, the New Bo Run Half Marathon and 10K Race, the New Bo Sculpture Invitational, the High School & College NextGen Artist Invitational, the New Bo Fashion Show, a live graffiti spray, the annual 2x2xU Public Art Event, as well as food, coffee and beverage venues. NewBo Art Fest is Cedar Rapids’ premier art show, focused on Midwest artists.

The first annual NewBo Arts Fest started in 2007 and in 2010 a marathon was added. Attendance and participation has increased each year with a record number of participants expected this year. The marathon is a great event for everyone from beginners to seasoned competitive runners. The half marathon course starts and finishes at the NewBo Market. It begins at 7:30am and takes participants on an out-and-back tour of the park trails and roads that run along the river on the Sac & Fox River Trail and through the Indian Creek Nature Center. Runners may choose a half marathon, 13.1 mile race; or a 10K, 6.2 mile run. The Half Marathon, 13.1 mile race, will route through the NewBo District in SE Cedar Rapids, Prairie Park Fishery, pass by Indian Creek Nature Center, and features three miles on the Sac and Fox Trail. There is no age limit for the race, as everyone is encouraged to participate. Babies and dogs are welcome, but organizers ask that you start in the back for safety and courtesy to others. You may register and find all the race information at http://newborun.com/.

Pick up your packet at NewBo City Market Saturday, August 31, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. The first 500 participants to pick up their race packet will receive a NewBo Run sticker. On the day of the race, registration and packet pickup is available from 6:00am to 7:15am. The race begins at 7:30am and the finish line closes at 10:45am. There is a discount for early registration. There will be water stops along the running routes for both races.

After finishing the race you’ll want to stick around for the post race party. They will have fast and accurate timing results with awards going to the speedy runners. All earn a custom, one-of-a-kind, handmade by the Ceramic Center medal.

To refuel your body, local businesses will bring in the freshest, tastiest post race snacks one can find. Sykora Bakery is serving their famous kolaches, Rustic Hearth Bakery is baking up warm pretzel rolls and Brewhemia will be handing out our favorite breakfast burritos. If you still have room after all that, drink a pint (or two!) of the free Lion Bridge craft beer! The post race party is included with the runner entry fee, so stick around and enjoy the music, food and the NewBo Art Fest in the afternoon. The day will be fun for everyone!
