A New Marion YMCA – All Together Better
When the Imagine8 community goals and needs were identified, a community center was on top of the list. So, it only made sense for the City of Marion to partner with the YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metro Area to plan for a new, larger, better equipped Y for everyone to use and enjoy. In 1963 when the existing Y was built, the population of Marion was about 12,000. Today, the Marion population is pushing 40,000, up about 32%, and the old Y at 35,000 square feet just cannot accommodate the needs of the growing community. The Capital Campaign for the new Marion YMCA is currently underway.
Planning is underway to replace the existing Y with a new facility which will be 89,000 square feet to best serve Marion and surrounding communities. As a community center, it will host basketball and volleyball tournaments as well as leagues in several middle-school size gyms and volleyball courts. Groups and organizations will be able to use or rent community rooms with kitchen space. A large indoor walking track will give individuals and groups a safe place to walk and run throughout the year. In addition to a traditional full-size lap pool, there will be a zero-entry family play pool. Family locker rooms will enable caretakers to bring children or adults who need assistance into a private areas for changing and showering. Children will have a large outdoor area—as well as a spacious indoor Child Watch room—where they can play under the supervision of trained Y staff while their parents participate in activities within the facility. Classes ranging from cycling to Tai Chi, arthritis exercise to Zumba will take place in ample studio space. A wellness center will be equipped with cardio equipment, weight machines and free weights for all ages and fitness abilities, and personal trainers will be available to customize workouts for health seekers. An on-site dietitian will be available for nutrition advice. The entry will be a social gathering space anchored by a snack bar to create a vibrant place for people of every age to mingle.
“The Marion YMCA is a long overdue amenity for the people of Marion and surrounding areas. The unique partnership with the city of Marion enables us to make this a comprehensive facility that can carry out multigenerational, cause-driven YMCA programming for many future generations.” Robert E. Carlson, President & CEO, YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area
The new YMCA will be constructed on 13 acres along Tower Terrace Road and Winslow Road in Marion. This location was chosen as it is situated along the new transportation corridor currently being constructed across the northern Cedar Rapids metro area. This will also make the new facility easily accessible from Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, Robins and northern Linn County residents.

The Y Board has decided to sell the old site. An appraisal is currently being done to determine the value of that site.

Yes. A detailed five-year operating pro forma for the Marion Y has been evaluated by local financial experts who have concluded that the Y can operate in the black, given the anticipated grown in membership and programs.

Yes, the Y is a 501 (c)3 charitable organization. One hundred percent of your contribution is tax deductible.
What if the campaign falls short of its goal? What will you do with my contribution?
Construction will not begin until we have the adequate funds to do so. Your pledge to this project will be used as collateral with local financial institutions to secure a five-year Bridge Loan. This will enable construction to begin prior to receiving all of the cash from the pledges.
