A Hidden Gem

By Michelle Howe

The little borough of Atkins is only a stone’s throw away from Cedar Rapids, especially now with the extension of Highway 100. With a much lower tax bracket and a school system in the top 3% in the state, Atkins is kind of a “hidden gem” in the region. Nestled on the west end of town is a beautiful four-bedroom, three bath home, featured in last year’s Parade of Homes.

Built by LDR Homes, this residence is loaded with quality and design features that will make this house a comfortable place to call home. The front portico runs half the length of the home and leads you into the front entry. An open staircase to the basement is on the right, while the left side leads to the dining, kitchen and living areas that are spacious and well executed.

The state-of-the-art kitchen is complete with stainless steel appliances, an over the range microwave and island that easily seats four. Granite countertops and Alder wood cabinets create a warm space, accented by the bronze colored pendant lighting fixtures above. The main level flows fluidly from dining to kitchen to living areas, with a coffered ceiling in the living room that adds to the feeling of spaciousness. A fireplace is angled in the corner past the tri-paned picture window overlooking the backyard. Off the kitchen is a door that leads to a covered rear porch and patio, perfect for hanging out in your lounge chair. Another nice feature is the garage that opens on both sides, for indoor-outdoor living and entertaining.

Entering the home from the garage, there is a utility space with ample room for shoes and coats. Throw your dirty things into the laundry - as it’s immediately to your right - complete with a deep washroom tub, cupboards and counter space. Past the laundry is the huge master closet (about 8 x 8) that then connects to the master bath and bedroom. His and hers granite countertop vanities sit between a raised pedestal counter perfect for a decorative flower arrangement. There is a full-size tub as well as a spacious, separate shower stall with a built-in seat. The floor tile here is a composite gray, beige and white that meshes well with the gray tile in the shower stall and the fleck tones in the countertops. The gray carpet in the master bedroom is the perfect shade to tie the rooms together and a tray in the ceiling adds greater depth to the bedroom.

At the other end of the main level are two bedrooms - one to the left, one to the right - with the bath in between. Double door closets and 4 ½ inch walnut trim give the feeling of luxury throughout this well thought out home. Another design feature is the chamfer bead used on the drywall corners that gives two crisp lines on every corner and allows different colored walls without interference.

Down the steps to the lower level there is another finished bedroom and bath and a large space for the family room. The plush carpet is a short pile in a brown/gray/white fleck that is designed to not show footprints as easily. Off the finished basement area are two more spaces that are not finished, offering ample opportunity to create an office or workout room. The heating and cooling system is top of the line and the home also has built in air purifier and humidifier systems. Another special design feature of this home is a poured cement “safe-room” that runs along the front of the home in the basement. It can also be used as a wine cellar or added storage. All in all this gorgeous home has 2544 sq. feet of finished space, a beautiful landscaped yard, front and back, and a three stall garage that’s tucked around the side of the home, hidden from view.
