Cedar Rapids Annual EcoFest promises Good Green Fun for the whole family! This FREE Earth Day celebration is a collaboration planned by multiple local non-profit environmental groups, along with other community organizations. EcoFest helps us connect our personal choices to individual, community and planetary sustainability.
Kick off the day with Trees Forever and participate in a tree planting bike ride. Grab your bike and meet at Prairie Park Fishery, 2125 Ottis Rd, at 9am. First you will learn the proper way to plant a tree, then, will plant a handful of new trees to replace what was lost from winter damage at Prairie Park Fishery. When finished, the group will take a bike ride to Eco-Fest to join in on the fun.
This family-friendly festival includes the Eco-Film Fest, interactive educational activities, eco-practice demonstrations on how to reduce our consumption of resources, fun ways to reduce and reuse household items, local foods, and free live music all day! Activities include learning how to upscale furniture, how to compost and how to garden in your home. Make seed balls for the monarchs and pollinators, and learn about windmills by playing with scale models. Yard games and a nature playscape area will be a great interactive way to get the kids involved and have fun!
Make sure to check out the Live Raptor Program at CSPS Hall, 1103 3rd St SE, from 11-11:30am. See live hawks and owls and learn about their natural history and wildlife rehabilitation.
While you are at EcoFest, take a shuttle to the top of Mount Trashmore and see the nearly completed scenic overlook and trail system that is being developed. This will be the last opportunity to see a preview of the overlook before work on the trail system starts this spring. The overlook and trails then will be open later this summer for public biking and hiking.
Shuttles will be available from the Geonetric parking lot to take EcoFest visitors to the top of Mount Trashmore beginning at 10:00am with the last shuttle trip down at 3:30pm. Shuttles will run approximately every 10-15 minutes between the parking lot and top of Mount Trashmore. Visitors may remain at the top of Mount Trashmore as long as they like and catch a shuttle down at their discretion. Walking and biking will not be available during EcoFest shuttle trips, visitors must use the shuttles provided.
This is a FREE public event. For a more detailed schedule of activities, films, musical performances and classes offered visit www.ecofestcr.org or like us on Facebook@EcofestCR.
