Spring is ushering in new initiatives for a group with a new name: the Greater Cedar Rapids Housing & Building Association, including an addition to its popular Parade of Homes.

Formerly known as the Greater Cedar Rapids Area Home Builders Association, the name change was announced in November to also encompass commercial builders, said Executive Officer Melissa Olson.

“We’re looking to add more commercial builders, to let them know we’re an association for them, as well as home builders,” she said.

The association provides networking and offers connections for building professionals to work together to provide quality, efficient, affordable structures for the Cedar Rapids area, as well as a directory for the public to find qualified businesses for building and remodeling projects.

Along with builders, the group includes associate members, which can include electricians, roofers and other contractors and tradespeople who complete the structures. Members – who abide by the organization’s code of ethics – can be found in the directory on the group’s website.

Among its most well-known programs are the Fall and Spring Parade of Homes. This year’s Spring Parade of Homes will be April 29 and 30, May 4 and May 6-7.

The event includes open houses at 22 new homes and, for the first time for the spring tour, two remodeled homes, which will be shown on May 6-7, in addition to the new construction.
Last year, more than 1,000 tickets were sold for the Spring Parade of Homes, which is growing in popularity. “The Parade is very well known throughout the community,” Olson said.

That offers a huge advantage for members of the association who show homes that are either on the market or pre-sold, she added. “It’s a great opportunity for our members to showcase not only what they can do,” Olson said, “but who they are.”

That, in turn, also gives the public an opportunity to meet with potential builders and to learn about what they offer. The Fall Parade of Homes has been held for more than 20 years, while the spring event was added in 2010.

This is the first time the Spring Parade of Homes has included two full weekends, Olson said. Attendees can use their tickets at any or all of the days of the parade to be able to view all of the homes.

Featured homes, in a variety of neighborhoods with a range of price points, give prospective homeowners a firsthand look at the latest advances in home construction and a chance to discover new ideas in floor plans, products and home design.

The association also is known for its partnership with Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity to build homes during the Home Builders Blitz, which takes place every other year. Last year, three homes were built in Cedar Rapids in just five days during the nationwide blitz in June.

This year, the group will join forces on a new project, in partnership with Kirkwood Community College. “Tiny Project 2017” involves renovating a 40-foot shipping container into a “tiny home.”
Planning and design are already underway. High school students provide the labor, with the GCRHBA offering materials, monetary donations and mentoring, Olson said. The project will be completed by September, to be included on the Fall Parade of Homes.

“We’re very excited to work with the high school students and Kirkwood on this,” Olson said, adding that members hope to make it an annual project.

The project, and others such as the Home Builders Blitz, align with the association’s new tagline: Building Our Community. “Our focus is trying to reach out to our community for our members and to be involved in the community more,” Olson said.

Chad Pelley, board president of the GCRHBA and business development manager at Ahmann Companies, said members are enthusiastic about the association’s involvement in the community, particularly with Tiny Project 2017, in mentoring and encouraging students to become active in the trades.

“We build the community, literally and figuratively,” he said.

At its November gala, which featured a keynote speech by Medal of Honor winner Salvatore Giunta, the association donated a $5,000 check to HACAP’s Operation Home, which supports homeless veterans.

Olson said the group plans to donate to another charity this year, with more support from an expanding number of members.

“We’re looking forward to the growth of our HBA,” she said. “It’s a great association of really good people.”
